What type of timber are Barrierscreens’ Inception Timber Shutters made from?
Our Inception Timber Shutters are available in two options: Basswood and Paulownia. Whilst both are quite similar in functional features, there are a few key differences that we will explore below.
Basswood
Tilia americana, commonly known as Basswood, is a member of the hardwood family. With a Janka Hardness of 410 lbf, Basswood is a sturdy material suited to high-traffic areas, all the while, its lightness makes it ideal for larger shutter panels, because it’s less likely to put pressure on the supporting hinges.
A favourite for cabinetry and the aviation industry due to its excellent weight to strength ratio, Basswood also has low thermal conductivity, helping to insulate your home through the warmer months.
Paulownia
Paulownia tomentosa is comparable in strength and weight to Western Red Cedar. With a Janka Hardness of 300 lbf, it’s buoyancy makes it a marine industry favourite and a popular choice for surf boards and yachts. Like Basswood, it has low thermal conductivity, but with an added bonus of a high ignition temperature of 400-450°C, compared to other hardwoods, which sit at about 220-250°C.
